Born in Lancashire, Caroline MacPhie studied at the Royal Northern College of Music and the Royal Academy of Music Opera course with Noelle Barker and Audrey Hyland, graduating in 2009 with distinction. Prior to this she read French and German at Bristol University. She currently studies with Iris dell’Acqua.

Caroline is the recipient of numerous awards, including First Prize in the 2008 Emmy Destinn Awards in Prague, a Miriam Licette Scholarship (MBF), the Dame Eva Turner Award and the Blyth-Buesst Opera Prize (RAM), the Schubert Prize and the Claire Croiza Prize for French Song at the RNCM. She is a 2011/12 Kirckman Society Artist and recently won a Philip and Dorothy Green Award for Young Concert Artists. Caroline is also a Samling Scholar, Wingate Scholar and a Britten-Pears Young Artist.

Caroline’s operatic roles include Cleopatra (cover – Giulio Cesare) for Opera North, Frasquita (Carmen) for Scottish Opera, Nerone (Agrippina) for Cambridge Handel Opera Group and the title role in The Cunning Little Vixen for the Banff Centre, Canada. For Royal Academy Opera she has performed the roles of Nerina (Haydn La Fedeltà Premiata) conducted by Trevor Pinnock, Berenice (Rossini L’Occasione fa il ladro) and Dew Fairy (Hänsel und Gretel). In 2007 she was a member of Glyndebourne Festival Chorus. Future engagements include the premiere of SUM, a new opera by Max Richter and directed by Wayne McGregor, for ROH2 at the Linbury Studio, Serpina La Serva Padrona for Opera Project at West Green House, Hampshire and Despina Così fan tutte for Dubrovnik Opera.

On the oratorio platform Caroline has recently performed Mozart Requiem with the Philharmonia and Choir of King’s College, Cambridge at the Bedford Corn Exchange, Szymanowski Stabat Mater with the New London Orchestra at Cadogan Hall, Handel Dixit Dominus with the Classical Opera Company at King’s Place, and Vivaldi Gloria with the European Union Chamber Orchestra in Spain. Futher performance highlights include Vaughan Williams Sinfonia Antartica with the Hallé, Bach St. John Passion with the Hanover Band and the title role in Handel’s Athalia with the Britten-Pears Baroque Orchestra. In 2009/10 she undertook a series of Johann Strauss Gala Concerts at all the major venues throughout the UK and Ireland including the Barbican, Bridgewater, Birmingham Symphony, Usher Hall Edinburgh and National Concert Hall in Dublin.

An accomplished lieder singer, Caroline has given recitals at the Wigmore Hall, Purcell Room, Oxford Lieder, Chichester and Two Moors Festivals. Last summer she performed Fauré’s La Bonne Chanson and the premiere of Remember This by Ian Venables with the Elias Quartet and Tom Poster at the Cheltenham Festival (also a Radio 3 broadcast) before going on to perform at the Ravinia Festival, Chicago, as a Steans Institute Young Artist. Further broadcasts include performances on Radio 2′s Friday Night is Music Night and Radio 3′s In Tune. 

Plans for the 2012/13 season include a return to the Wigmore Hall with Joseph Middlteon under the auspices of the Kirckman Society, a recital with Anna Tilbrook at the Two Moors Festival, Mozart arias with the Northern Sinfonia at  Ripon Cathedral and Grieg Songs with the Northern Lights Symphony Orchestra at Cadogan Hall.

La soprano anglaise Caroline MacPhie étudie les langues vivantes (français et allemand) à l’université de Bristol, puis le chant au Royal Northern College of Music à Manchester. En 2009 elle finit sa formation vocale auprès de Noelle Barker à la Royal Academy of Music à Londres. En 2008 elle remporte le premier prix du Concours Emmy Destinn à Prague et en 2009 elle est l’artiste sélectionnée du prestigieux Young Classical Artists Trust de Londres.

A l’opéra, elle se produit dans les rôles de Cléopâtre (doublure – Giulio Cesare) pour Opera North, Frasquita (Carmen) pour Scottish Opera, le rôle titre de La Petite Renarde Rusée au Banff Centre au Canada, Nerina (Haydn La Fedeltà Premiata) sous la direction de Trevor Pinnock et Berenice (Rossini L’Occasione fa il ladro) à la Royal Academy of Music de Londres. On a pu également l’entendre dans les rôles de la Fée Rosée (Hänsel und Gretel) et de Miss Wordsworth (Albert Herring) et en 2007 elle fait partie du choeur de Glyndebourne. Dernièrement elle a fait une tournée de la musique de Johann Strauss dans toutes les grandes salles britanniques, parmi lesquelles le Barbican de Londres, le Symphony Hall de Birmingham et le Bridgewater Hall de Manchester. Cette saison elle chante dans le nouveau opéra SUM de Max Richter au Linbury Studio du Royal Opera House et le rôle de Serpina La Serva Padrona pour Opera Project au West Green House dans le Hampshire. En concert on a pu l’entendre dans le Requiem de Mozart (dir. Bernard Labadie à Aldeburgh), Athalie (rôle titre) de Haendel (dir. Richard Egarr à Aldeburgh) et Sinfonia Antartica (dir. Martyn Brabbins à Manchester). Elle se produit avec des formations telles que le Hallé, le Hanover Band, le Stockholm Sinfonietta et l’Orchestre de l’Union Européenne. Caroline montre également un profond intérêt pour la mélodie et le lied et pendant ses études au RNCM remporte le Prix Schubert et le Prix Claire Croiza. Elle se produit régulièrement avec le pianiste Joseph Middleton et en février 2011 le duo fait ses débuts au Wigmore Hall de Londres. Caroline et Joseph reviendront au Wigmore en 2012/13  pour un récital avec The Kirckman Society. La saison prochaine elle chanterai aussi des mélodies de Grieg avec The Northern Lights Symphony Orchestra au Cadogan Hall et des airs de Mozart avec The Northern Sinfonia au cathédrale de Ripon.

Zu ihren Partien gehören Cleopatra (zweite Besetzung – Giulio Cesare) für Opera North, Frasquita (Carmen) für Scottish Opera, die Titelpartie in Das schlaue Füchslein an der Banff Centre, Kanada, Nerina (La Fedeltà Premiata von Haydn) mit Trevor Pinnock und Berenice (L’occasione fa il ladro von Rossini) an der Royal Academy of Music. Während ihres Studiums interpretierte sie auch Partien wie Miss Wordsworth (Albert Herring), Taumann (Hänsel und Gretel) und Lucy (Der Dreigroschenoper). 2009/10 unternahm sie eine nationale Operettentournee und im Jahre 2007 war sie Mitglied des Glyndebourne Festival Chorus. Dieser Sommer ist sie im neuen Oper SUM von Max Richter an Linbury Studio für Royal Opera House zu erleben und sie wird auch die Partien von Serpina (La Serva Padrona für Opera Project) und Despina (Così fan tutte in Dubrovnik) interpretieren.

Im Konzertbereich arbeitete Caroline MacPhie mit dem Hallé Orchester unter Martyn Brabbins (Sinfonia Antartica von Vaughan Williams), dem Britten-Pears Orchester unter Bernard Labadie (Requiem von Mozart) und dem Hanover Band (Johannes Passion von Bach). Sie ist auch mit dem Stockholm Sinfonietta und Orchester des Europaïschen Unions aufgetreten. Neben ihrer Opern- und Konzertaufführungen legte sie schon ihren Schwerpunkt auf Liedgesang und während ihres Studiums gewann sie den Schubert Preis und den Claire Croiza Preis. Sie arbeitet regelmässig mit dem Pianisten Joseph Middleton und im Februar 2011 gab das Liedduo ihr Debüt in der Londoner Wigmore Hall, wo sie wieder in der Spielzeit 2012/13 mit The Kirckman Society zu erleben sind .Zudem besuchte sie Meisterkurse unter anderem bei Christian Gerhaher, Matthias Goerne Gerold Huber (beim Aldeburgh Festival) und Felicity Lott. Letzter Sommer sang sie an der Ravinia Festival, Chicago, mit der Steans Institute for Young Artists. Zu ihren künftigen Konzertaufführungen gehören Lieder von Grieg mit dem Northern Lights Orchestra an Cadogan Hall und Mozart Arien mit dem Northern Sinfonia am Dom von Ripon.
